IQP Inspections

(& Passive Fire Inspections)

What are these inspections?

An IQP Inspection is an official asset survey carried out by an Independently Qualified Person—a registered professional approved by regional authorities to inspect specific safety systems. A Passive Fire Inspection focuses specifically on structural safety features, such as fire-rated walls, smoke doors, fire curtains, and fire-stopping sealants around pipes and cables, which work together to contain smoke and flames within a specific area.

Who requires these inspections?

Every commercial property owner with a Compliance Schedule must hire a registered IQP annually to inspect their specified systems. Additionally, any building with designated fire cells, fire separation doors, or smoke-stop barriers requires formal monthly and annual passive fire inspections.

Why It’s Important & New Zealand Law

The NZ Building Act 2004 dictates that only a registered, certified IQP can verify and sign off on specified systems for a Building Warrant of Fitness.

  • While active systems like sprinklers put out fires, passive fire systems physically prevent smoke and fire from spreading through a building.

  • Renovations or tradespeople running new internet cables can easily compromise fire walls by leaving unprotected holes behind.

  • Regular IQP inspections identify these hidden structural gaps, keeping your insurance valid and ensuring the building can structurally withstand a fire.
